The Southern method of Daoism is an ancient alchemy method based on the principle of first practicing Ming 命 (energy), then cultivating Xing 性 (soul). In this method, unlike the Northern method, there is no mandatory withdrawal from society; the practitioner can cultivate within society up to a certain stage. Also, in the Southern method of Daoism, there is no emphasis on sitting meditation as the initial stage of practice, unlike the Northern one. Both methods are preserved in the WuLiuPai School.

The Southern path of cultivation includes both solitary cultivation and dual cultivation in a male-female pair. The famous Daoist patriarch Zhang Boduan (or Zhang Ziyang), who is considered the very first patriarch of the Southern School of Daoism, is associated with the Southern direction of Daoism.
