Liu Huayang 柳華陽 (b. 1736), lived during the Qing Dynasty, was from Hongdu (洪都, now Nanchang in Jiangxi province). Liu Huayang was interested in Buddhism at an early age, and became a monk at the Shuanglian Temple in Wanshui. He later (in 1780) met Wu Chunxiu and received secret Taoist teachings from him. Liu Huayang explained quiet cultivation and the integration of Immortals and Buddhas. He believed that alchemy practice should mainly rely on pre-heaven Qi and avoid using post-heaven Qi.

Wu Chunxiu wrote the treatises:

  • 天仙正理直论 “True Principles of Heavenly Immortality”,

  • 仙佛合宗语录 “Common Teachings of Immortals and Buddhas”,

  • 金丹要诀 “ The Secret of the Golden Elixir”

Liu Huayang is the author of the treatises:

  • 慧命经 "Book of Understanding Life" A Treatise on the Knowledge of Destiny

  • 金仙证论 “Confirmatory Teachings of Golden Immortals”

Subsequent generations combined these four books and called them “ Wu Liu Xianzong ” 伍柳仙宗 becoming an important reference book for Taoist inner alchemy practice. . You can learn more about the doctrine of the school and the theory of Daoist alchemy in our classes.
